IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING, goes the MTA (NY public transport authority) imperative. A simple directive with a simple grammar that separates three simple steps in recognition and response.
First you there is the visual perception. The photons carrying visual information enter your eye and in the retina get converted to neuron signals which pass into your brain. A package in brown paper is given as an example. Second,  the silently presupposed step: you line up the perception in your brain against cognitive patterns, a grid of memories, experiences and possible scenarios. The one you are expected to employ in this context is the one of fear of unexpected terrorist attrocity. Third, you are instructed to take action by forming apropriate language descrition of your perception and bundle it together with your suspicions and hand it over to a person with a mandate to deal with the problem. Language is the recommended tool here for grasping the reality, a supposedly safe tool to handle potentially expolsive reality. There are experts for safe handling the physical reality, who should take appropriate actions.
Taking things out of context has been one of the most favorite strategies of visual artists. Once a thing is taken out of its original context it starts to gravitate towards multitude of meanings. It becomes a loose object that one can align against a whole number of grids within one’s own experience. My favorite language for handling found objects is video. Fragments of reality are taken and tested for their potential to enter various contexts. This is where the subject enters: the word video comes from Latin and literally translates as “I see”. What we can draw out of that definition is that video is a very personal perception. There is the “I” – the subject. My strategy in working with video is comparable to Barthes’ search for “punctum” in photography. I select things that for me seem to have that “punctum”, a point of triggering a thought process, a process of aligning the perception to multiple cognitive grids.
The activitiy of associating is an important ingredient in games for its potetntial to undermine rigid meanings of things, objects, words, thoughts. It is a playful and cheerful destruction with a potential to rejuvenate our view of the world around us. I offer several moving images for your scrutiny found in the world that for you is the daily life. Is there a trigger? Is there anything explosive in there? Is there a potential for some free associations? Let me propose another scenario, possibly a more positive one: IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY ANYTHING.

excerpts from a performance done as an introduction to screening of film faceless by manu luksch.
out of george orwell’s 1984 i selected all passages describing faces and read them aloud with a white mask on. it’s in czech, sorry.
screening took place at kino světozor as part of regular weekly experimental screening series titled audiovisual curated by sylva poláková. screening was brought by tranzit, initiative for contemporary art.

meeting nick currie aka momus, whom i admire greatly for his brilliant music and lyrics, his critical thinking, humor and irony. momus exhibited one piece at “a spoken word exhibition” curated by mathieu copeland at gallery tranzitdisplay in prague and performed two passages from his upcoming “book of jokes” at the opening of the exhibition. in the middle photo nick performs his exhibited piece for me himself. i’m not telling.

video and installation notes: this two channel piece was conceived for venue called “skutečnost” (reality), which resides in the basement of czech inn hostel in prague – vinohrady. the male lavatories in the hostel have a very peculiar interior design: above the toilet bowl there is a narrow horizontal mirror which allows one to see one’s face when standing up and there is a similar mirror above the urinal at such height that one can see his own crotch when standing up. for these mirrors i staged an ambiguous and violent little event and transfered it downstairs into the gallery space on two television sets in two niches with mirrors so that the viewer can only see the tv screen in the mirror. venue “reality” doesn’t currently have lavatories – so all its visitors have to use those upstair in the hostel.

videocamera is a catatonic digital memory, indifferent to what it is watching and what it is listening to. it is never going to protest, however boring the subject it is pointed at may be. it will write down anything that comes within its view and records any sound within its earshot. vidocamera is a sampling tool. lethargically, as it is expected to, it will take samples of the visual and aural reality, which appears from its viewpoint as an indifferent array of possible configurations of image pixels. the apparatus is completely unaware how unique the recorded cofiguration is and that it is impossible to reconstruct it the same way again. the memory of the apparatus is completely different to that of its operator. the contradictions between the two leads to a complex relationship. at times it may be a harmony, other times a conflict, there are moments of deep affection and periods of mutual ignorance.

videoinstallation fractal zoom (liberty st.) consists of several footages anchored in time and space. place is a house on street of liberty (if the operator’s memory is correct) number 2 and time is last ten day of may 2006. lethargic observations capture some of the inhabitants in their activities, movements in or around the house, explore the surrounding space or just scan for compositions. they investigate larger picture, cut out and zoom in on details of time and space. process of viewing is also a process of listening and remembering. impressionist slice and concrete life.
